I prefer paper. After all, that is how books are supposed to be. But if I had to buy one, it would be a Kindle. My pastor has one and loves it. He uses it for school and he it has exceeded his expectations. I have a few other friends who did some better research, including and IT guy, and they all went with the Kindle also.

Yes, you can do searches. I also work in IT, and bought the Sony primarily because of its ability to work the PDF's (something the Kindle doesn't do very well).

That's my major disappointment with the Libre: it doesn't handle PDFs well. It will read them, and simple ones work fine, but anything printed in double columns really throws it off.

That said, the Libre works very well for me. I'm a writer and it allows convenient access to thousands of free books I want to read for literary inspiration, and I can load my own work onto it in rich text format and read when I'm away from my computer. The Libre won't edit my work or take notes, but carrying a seperate notebook is a minor inconvenience. I'm also a dedicated reader with a very long commute by public transit, and the Libre allows me to carry any book I want, and extra books in case I finish that one, and poetry in case I get in the mood, and a Bible, and it's smaller - though heavier - than most paperbacks.

If I were to replace it and money weren't an issue, I think I'd get the Sony. But I'm happy with my Libre.

Kindle because nook has glitches. Although kindle does not have a back light, it's more eye-friendlier over time. Besides, Amazon will be releasing Kindle 3 this month.

I am upgrading to K3, and giving my K1 to my wife to let the kids use for homeschooling.

The K3 has a cover that has a light built in, the light gets power from the Kindle, but it is an LED, not a backlight.

Ok, just thought I would throw out a real-world experience here regarding the Kindle 2.

Our (nearly) 2 yo snatched my wife's Kindle 2 and walked into the kitchen to show it to her. Before my wife could retrieve it, our little angel (of death and destruction) ran straight to the bathroom and yes... pitched into the toilet.

My wife snagged it out immediately (and then remained a safe distance from the child for a few hours - for both their protection).

I took the back off, removed the battery, dried it out best I could, and then put it way up out of all non-adult reach and let it sit for a few days to dry. I didn't feel the need to put it in rice or other desiccant because it only took in water around the edges.

Yes, it still works, and we have found no lingering issues.

Your mileage may vary.

My Kindle 1 has been dropped repeatedly and once fell down the stairs. It was purchased the first month they became available, so that's how old it is.

While waiting for 3 hours in line at the DMV today, I saw a young lady with the same kindle I have chuck it into the street in a rage, and have a small car drive over it. The system still worked, but I dare say there were a few black splotches on the screen....Seems it does have a bit of a mileage on it.

It is small enough that I was able to put it in the back leg pocket of my cargo pants all weekend for when I had time to read!

I am always the last person to get with the new technology,so I have neither a Kindle or a nook. I didn't even know that they had different brands . I suppose I would get a Kindle because it's been out the longest and most of the people on the thread have said good things about it. One concern though - what would I do with all my paper texts. Are they even available in Kindle format?

Quite a few of them are, yes. You will need to re-purchase them if you want to use them with any Ebook reader.
Some publishing companies are putting out ebooks for free of some of the older books, others have deals you can make.
The big point for me was that some of the books I paid 30-50 bucks for are only 9 dollars on the readers.

If you want to try ebooks, Barnes and Nobles, who puts out the Nook, has a reader that you can put onto your computer and your phone for free.
I am not sure if Kindle has the same service.
We use the Ipad...more expensive but can be used with numerous sources of books. The family uses one B&N account so no matter what device we are on we can share books.

Side note, I have good friends who absolutely Love Their Kindles!

They do. They have Kindle for iPhone, Blackberry, and PC at least. All are free (the program, not the books). You can share books between devices on one account.

The Kindle reader is also available for Android cell phones, tablets, and netbooks.

I have the Nook and love it. Mine hasn't been buggy at all. Maybe that was the earlier ones? There have been a few software updates since it debuted. I chose Nook over Kindle and others I researched because it had more file flexibility and I could put pictures and music on it. A friend who has a Kindle says she can't put pix on hers. Not sure about music. I also liked the touch-screen aspect of Nook. You can download the BN reader for your computer iPhone and other devices. Cool thing about both Amazon and Kindle is that you can get most of the classics for free. I have the Bible on my Nook and it was so nice to be out and about today and then grabbed lunch and read some Ephesians while getting my nom, nom on. I'm a major bookworm and it's also nice that I can toss it in my purse so just in case I'm waiting in line somewhere, I can pull it out and have all my books at my disposal. Don't hold me to this, but I think Nook handles PDFs better than Kindle. I know I can also 'side load' a lot of stuff. You can also lend books to other Nook users for two weeks.

Edited to add that you can read any book for free in the store.

I stopped at the Nook kiosk in B&N while at the mall the other day. I had been pretty convinced that I was going to get a Kindle, but after seeing the Nook and reading more about it online, I'm thinking twice. Mainly because from what I understand, the Nook will support ePub which means I could get eBooks from the library. That would definitely open up my reading options since I doubt I'd want to buy every book. Thoughts?

Are there any of the ereaders that will let you interface with your computer? I have some stuff on my computer that I'd love to be able to read somewhere other than my desktop...
As of right now, i have no real preference, other than maybe an ipad would be out of my budget.

Thanks!

I suspect all of them interface with a PC. My Libre certainly does.

I know the Kindle does do music, and pictures, however, it only displays in black and white(Since there is no color screen.) It also does plug into the PC(The power plug is a usb transfer cable with a removable Power converter)

Blueeyedgirl, that was one of the reasons I chose the Nook. The file formats were more flexible and also with the Nook, you can load music and pictures. I also liked the color touch screen.

There are no color e-readers yet (The ipad is more of portable computer than an e-reader like the kindle).

They are working on the technology but it may not be ready for a while.

Borders Book Store is advertising a color ebook reader based on the Android operating system that will be available in the next few months. The android tablets so far have been cheap stuff from China with very poor battery life (but they could be found at around 100-200 dollars. The new Borders offering seems better made and is advertising up to 10 hours of battery time.

I also liked the color touch screen.

I believe that was what Miss Giggles was referring to, and the nook does have a small bar across the bottom that is a color touch screen, but the rest is not color.
