Maybe soon they will come out with a study that says breathing oxygen is hazardous to your health too.

Well, my blood sugar is still low, well within range. Does anyone know what "normal" blood sugar feels like with the body? I was told that because my blood sugar had been so high for too long that when it goes back to normal, that I would not feel like myself.

That's the truth Mike. When I first started to get "normal" readings I felt kinda woozy. You're so used to the high levels that when it gets down to where it belongs it's almost like having low blood sugar. You'll adjust quickly, though.

My doctor asked me about that when I got my sugars down to normal. He said a lot of his patients rave about how much better they felt. I didn't feel any different.

I'm the same, Judith. Everybody keeps asking me how I feel. I never felt bad, though.

Does fast food get a bad rap or is there really something to the idea that eating fast food promotes disease? Personally, I think it depends on how much and how often one eats fast food.

When mine came down. my eyes went blurry. Couldn't see anything up-close to read. It took about a month to go back to normal. And while I was in the hospital, people kept bringing me things to read. I didn't have the heart to tell them I couldn't read anything. It made loading the needles with insulin interesting too.

They told me when I was in the hospital last weekend, ok I admit it publicly now that when my eyes were blurry from the week before, that I should have gone in to the E/R then. My blood sugar has since been way under control. I am happy about that.

Oh, meant to say that wasn't my cause at all. I was just saying what I heard. BTW, 126 right now.

Ok, new question or comment. I just checked my blood sugar 6 times in a row. I got a reading from as low as 125 to as high as 175. The number 127 seemed the most common, but one reading read 169 as well. Is it possible that I am actually getting false highs as opposed to low's instead? Just wondering.

NEW PROBLEM! I started feeling weak and dizzy and like it was taking a lot of exertion to be alert. I tested my blood sugar and it was only at 60! I immediately ran to the store and ate 2 candy bars. This brought it up to about 96 or so. I went to the diabetes website and after reading that, I decided to drink some soda as well.

I am gonna wait another 20 minutes and then test my blood sugar again. I still feel a little shaky, but really want to avoid going to the E/R again it at all humanly possible.

Yes, all of that is what happens with a low sugar event. You'll be okay soon.

You should keep something on hand to drink or eat so you don't have to go to the store when you are low. The problem with that, at least for me, is not feeling tempted to eat your "emergency" food. One of my friends who has a type I son keeps cake decorating gel (that come in little tubes) on hand because her son doesn't like that, and won't sneak it.

Liguids work faster than candy bars, though candy bars are more fun. LOL

It is up to 200 something now. Still feeling a little shaky, light headed and with a headache. I called my health plan's ask a nurse program and they said to follow-up with my Dr. within the next 72 hours. I already have other health issues that I needed to call them with as well, so it will not be a problem with me calling them at all.

I am just very surprised that my blood sugar went so low so soon!

Wow, Mike! Mine never gets that low, so I don't have any suggestions for you. They did tell us at the diabetic class I took that we need to keep some hard candy handy. I know they make special candy for diabetics when sugar goes too low.

You can buy fast-acting glucose tablets in the diabetes supply section at Walgreen WalMart, CVS, etc.

The recommendation I've read online, and have received from my doctors is when I'm low, eat 15g of sugar...three glucose tablets (Not two candy bars, by the way). Re-test 15 minutes later .... and, if necessary, eat an additional 10g of sugar. (That would be 2 glucose tablets.)

I've been in the 60s .... not fun. But running out to the store isn't wise or safe with blood sugars that low, and eating 2 candy bars is not your best choice. Get some glucose tablets and keep them on hand. (I have them at home, in my car, in my bike basket and in my purse.)

I just wanted to get my blood glucose sugar back up. After 2 candy bars, it was still below 100. It is now at 144-178, depending on which reading is accurate. Yes, I am still having trouble getting accurate readings.

I have a small cooler that I keep with me. It contains my blood sugar meter kit, extra barrels of test strips, alcohol pads, insulin, glucose tablets, snack bars and nitro pills. My blood sugar does go low into the 60's at times. Sometimes lower. When that happens, I usually have a snack bar worth about 15-20 grams of carbs. That's usually all that I need...one carb count.

When my blood sugar goes low, it's usually either because I didn't count carbs closely enough and didn't eat enough, or because of considerably more exercise than normal.

Years ago, before I was diabetic, I was hypoglycemic. If I didn't eat, but blood sugar dropped out the bottom. At work, we had an annual physical that required a 12-hour fast before blood work. The nurse was quite concerned when my fasting blood sugar reading was 42.

Mike, what did you do before the blood sugar dropped? Were you more active than usual?

I usually wait at least 30 minutes, if not a full hour, for my BSL to go back up.

And yes, it's not unusual for the symptoms of blood sugar fluctuations to stay with you for a while.

By the way, in many places, it's illegal to drive while you're low. Did you walk, drive, or take the subway to the store?

For lows, I use juice boxes and glucose tablets mostly -- I keep them with me. And I have OJ at home. My doc recommended 20 g of fast-acting carbs for me, which is 5 sugar packets or 5 glucose tablets.

And it's good to eat a starch and a protein -- like peanut butter and crackers -- to help stabilize your BSL once it's no longer low.

Why not just check that one time and trust the meter? If I checked three times in a row all the time, I would go nuts!!
