It is having that first-hand knowlege of seeing someone you love die a painful death due to complications of diabetes that has driven me to keep my blood sugar under control. My experience with my father-in-law was similar, but it was his kidneys that were affected. That's why my husband and I are watching ours so closely. Fil never could get it through his head that it was important to keep the numbers down. He said he felt best in the 200 range and never worried when the meter couldn't read his sugars because they were too high. To him that just meant he needed to take more insulin with his large DQ shake.

My husband's first wife had severe complications, which took her life. Then stupid me -- I get it. Dopey, dopey dopey!

Actually, now that you have been diagnosed, you are much less likely to have complications. That is as long as you take proper care of yourself. The common thread with all the horror stories I know of is lack of control of blood sugars.

Yes, some people get it as a result of being overweight, but family history can also play a large part. I've struggled with my weight for most of my life save for a brief period in high school. However, there's also a strong history of diabetes on both sides of my family, so it's entirely possible weight may not have played a large part in my case.

I'm suppose to check, I just forget to do it. I guess I rely on the A1C too much. I've never seen mine over 270 though (after I eat) I am having chips and a pop (I know that's bad), so I'll have to remember to check in 2 hours. I just forget and it's more like 2.5 or 3 hours.

There are so many people being diagnosed with diabetes now and not all of them are overweight and older. Younger and younger people are being diagnosed. There is even an increase in the amount of type 1s.. there are even some older adults getting type 1 in their late twenties and thirties. Halle Berry is one of them. She went into a diabetic coma and didn't know she had it. So don't beat yourself up. I am sure there is something in our environment that has changed our bodies.

This is really good information. My question today is can you point me to chart which lists the carbs in foods without labels... like fruits & veggies? If I'm going to count carbs, I can't just exclude those things without a manufacturers' label, can I?

Question. Does you insurance pay for your test strips? Mine pays for them, but when I was taking classes at my endocrinologist's office the teacher said insurance companies are trying to get out of paying for them. Then in the Philadelphia Inquirer this week a doctor who writes a column in the Health & Science section said that she had a patient in her ER whose diabeties was not well controled. He said his insurance company would only cover a small suppy of strips, so he could only check a few times per week.

I had a $30 copay for mine. The Dr's and nurses said not to check it all the time, but only if I feel off. Honestly, I have been feeling a little off for a bit now.

My insurance covers the test strips, the finger poker things, and the monitor.

My insurance covered the monitor and the finger poking thing, just a copay for the strips instead.

Lurking here. Diabetes runs very strongly in my family, but it mostly seems to be type 1 (insulin dependent), although with a later than usual onset. My younger brother (dx age 16), a first cousin (dx in his 20's), an aunt (dx in her 20's), possibly a few great aunts, and at least a few second cousins. My cousin has a pump, but my brother does the finger sticks and insulin shots several times/day. My brother was diagnosed in the dr's office during a checkup, but we pretty much knew when they did the test because of our family history and his symptoms. He'd lost about 20 lbs in a month or two (and my brother has never been a heavy guy), was drinking and going to the bathroom nonstop, and generally just looked terrible. I think they said his fasting glucose was over 300 when they tested, and by the time they admitted him to the hospital that day (several hours and a meal later) he was over 500.

My insurance does not pay for my test strips... probably because I've never asked Because I'm only insulin resistant the A1C is good enough for now, and I just watch how I'm feeling and how my PCOS symptoms are doing.

I love bananas. Sometimes I go bananas, but that's another story. Bananas make really good snacks. quote:
ORIGINAL: Auben He had trouble accepting his diagnosis Oh boy, do I relate to this! When I was first diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I took it so hard. It took me so long to pick myself up and begin functioning again. Honestly, when I was told, anybody would have thought that I'd been told that I had just 2 minutes to live or something. We've got a different system over here. We sign up with Diabetes Australia, or the diabetes place in my state. I can get the test strips for 50 cents a box. You can get 2 boxes at a time. I see a specialist who wants me to do 4 readings in a day for 2 days a week. Before breakfast, before lunch, before dinner and after dinner. I don't go through a lot of test strips, but with John being diabetic as well, they get used.

Does you insurance pay for your test strips? They do with a copay. But the copay is waived if you order them at the same time as the insulin.

Mine covers 100% but I am not technically diagnosed as pre-diabetic. When I go back and if its still over 100 even with diet and exercise changes than I'll ask for a meter and a prescription. do you exercise before or after eating? How much do you spend on groceries (for 1-2 people)

do you exercise before or after eating? There are pros and cons to each. Some will go hypo if they exercize before they eat. Others can't exercize on a full tummy. My best advice is to exercize whenever it's best for you, and more specifically, when it is most likely to actually happen. quote:
How much do you spend on groceries (for 1-2 people) We spend about $75 per week for two people, but we eat out a lot too and that's not included in that figure.
