I don't know if any of my family, other than one of my brothers ever had diabetes. Both my parents were alcoholics though, so with the amount of sugar they were consuming in the alcohol, I'd say they were diabetics even if they weren't diagnosed.

I've also learned to enjoy Vanilla soy milk... I like to have it in cereal and in my coffee..... but there again, I have to be careful about the carbs. Soy milk may be good for my heart.... but it's added carbs.

I'd just stop drinking it all together, it's bad for your thyroid. How about almond milk?

.

...... what???!!!! wow! I thought I was doing something healthy for myself! I've never heard of almond milk... I'll have to check that out....

Diabetes is on both sides of my family. My father's side is worse. I have an aunt that is a double amputee (legs) because of it. They used to say that Diabetes will skip a generation... but my doctor way back when said that's pretty much a myth. I worry about what my girls eat now. They each have a HUGE sweet tooth! We talk about healthier choices all the time....

Question of the Day:

We have been talking about adding 'a little more protein' to our diets so we are not as hungry all the time.

What are some examples of 'protein'?

Have a great day, guys!

Heavenly Father, I thank you for loving us more than we may ever realize. I thank You for one more day to serve You... and I thank You for the new friends You are knitting together through unfavorable (in our eyes) life circumstances.

Father, please help each of us to make healthy eating and exercise choices today... starting with small choices first. Help us to remember that taking care of our bodies is a physical act of worship to You.

We praise You, Father. May our lives glorify You.

In the precious name of Jesus, Amen.

I drink Rice Milk - I just like it best.

These are my main sources:
I love Tofu and you get about 10 grams of protein per 1/2 cup.
Salmon is excellent as are several other fishes.
Eggs are another source if you don't overdue.

The powders and bars and such usually have a trade-off involved - either too many carbs or too much fat content. Depending on where you are health-wise, I would eat/drink these sparingly.

The proteins I eat most are eggs and cheese. I don't eat a lot of them though.

Breakfast:

Typically either eggs and multi-grain toast, or 'old-fashioned' oatmeal...not the instant or the 'quick oats'.

Predisposition:

My great-grandmother was type-2 diabetic. My mother is now too, but she wasn't diagnosed until after I was, so later in life for her. Probably was later in life for the great-grandmother too. My dad is hypoglycemic.

Protein:

Ribeye steak!

I'm curious, does this ever happen to anybody else?

If my blood sugar goes way up--like I've been very "naughty" or I've taken medication that makes it go up I will have a low blood sugar incident several hours later. It's like my body turns up the insulin production to take care of the high, and then it over does it so I get a bad low.

Yes that used to happen to me before I was diagnosed. It's a vicious weight-gain circle.

Thank you for the carb counting info, guys! I really appreciate that. And the ideas about protein, too.

My doctor suggested I leave carbs behind to decrease my pain levels. It seems to be working, as I ate more carbs a couple of days ago, and I awoke in the middle of the night with increased pain again. That being said... you all know how hard it is discontinue carbs completely.

So... since cereal is bad, and because of the medication I'm taking I can't have dairy within an hour, the protein ideas are also very helpful. My mother is low on protein, too... so ideas and options are great!

Tofu? Please discuss preparation of this. I know so little about tofu.

Tofu does have a small amount of carbohydrate component.

I was listening to the radio this morning and they had a nutritionist on there...her advice was this:

Intake of water should be about half your body weight in ounces per day in the summer. (200 lbs = 100 oz of water)

Intake of protein to build muscle mass should be half plus half body weight. (200 lbs = 150 grams of protein) THIS IS ONLY FOR GAINING MUSCLE MASS.

I blanked out with what she said about carbs cuase I was reeling from the protein deal...

Yup, I eat a TON of protein. I usually aim for half of my body weight in grams of protein, even when not trying to build muscle mass. The only problem with eating that much protein is... you have eat a lot of veggies to keep things moving

Almond milk is WONDERFUL! I make ice cream once in awhile, and the main ingredient is almond milk. I just make one helping at a time, not for the whole family. Our family is only us two now, and my husband can eat all the regular ice cream he wants.

Oh -- and I forgot: my brother is also diabetic.

Protein:

I don't know what I wouldn't do without peanut butter.

Since I started on Weight Watchers, I've switched to reduced fat peanut butters. Or all natural ones. At Wally World, I found a flaxseed-and-flaxseed-oil-enhanced peanut butter made naturally.

I also like Light BabyBel cheeses, Light Laughing Cow soft cheese, reduced fat colby-jack and mozzarella cheese sticks, and reduced fat string cheese.

smoked turkey luncheon meat

chicken, chicken, and more chicken
including ground chicken and canned chicken

tuna
salmon
tilapia
catfish
squid
scallops
mussels
clams
shrimp
lobster

tofu
soy crumbles
soy or veggie meat patties or sausage patties

beef
pepperoni
corned beef
pastrami
salami

beans (also have carbs)

pork chops
pork tenderloin

I think I need to join this discussion.

I've been living with type 2 diabetes for almost eight years. I was diagnosed shortly before 9/11. I've been on Avandia since I was diagnosed.

I had good control of my blood sugar the first few years. In the last three years, however, I've struggled. I can affirm that stress causes blood sugar to be less controllable. I was under significant stress the last two and a half years at my job, and I've been under a different kind of stress since I was laid off in late January.

Part of the difficulty I've got with managing my diet is that in addition to watching my carbs, I've got some food alllergies and intolerances. For example, I have to avoid peanuts and anything containing peanut oil. I'm also lactose intolerant.

In addition, I've sharply curtailed my physical activity since last fall due to chronic tendinitis in one of my ankles. I've gained 20 pounds since then, and that's not good for more than one reason.

I'm looking forward to getting - and contributing - useful information and support here.

Question of the Day

What do you eat for 'snack' time?

I haven't figured out what to eat for snack time yet.

Examples of protein: Peanuts.

Have you seen a dietician or nutritionist to talk about suggestions for meals and snacks made up of the foods you like (or healthier versions of the food you like)?

Not yet but the DR's are supposed to be calling me though.

I eat Raisin Bran for breakfast.

Diabetes does run in my family and the DR's did say that I had a disposition for it before I got it as well.

Snacktime...hmmm...usually some goat's cheese on a whole wheat cracker or some pnut butter on a celery stick.

In case of emergencies, I bust open the M&M's and eat a handful.

I also just heard that when women (and men, too I guess) crave chocolate...it's cause their magnesium levels are low. Interesting....

Snack time is usually an apple...sometimes a banana.

My dad had a longtime friend who eventually became my boss when I was a teenager. The guy was quite a character. He was at Omaha Beach in the invasion of Normandy.

Anyway, he had diabetes. I watched him go through a long, slow painful death from the disease. He went to the hospital with tremendous pain in his legs. He begged them to cut his legs off.

They didn't. But they did detach some major muscles in his legs in order to regain some blood flow. He spent the rest of his life in the hospital, dying several months later. Despite the pain, he was often in good spirits until the end. He was about 60.

It is having that first-hand knowlege of seeing someone you love die a painful death due to complications of diabetes that has driven me to keep my blood sugar under control.

The apple brings him to mind because it brings back a fond memory of helping him with some volunteer yardwork and him offering me an apple for a mid-morning break on a summer sunny day.

Must have been about 33 years ago, but I can picture it as if it were yesterday.

My bloodwork is back. it is not in the prediabetic range but it isn't too much below it. So I am going to still learn from this thread and work harder on following the diet. Hopefully I can start to lose weight.

I'm not diabetic, but my father and grandfather have both had type 2 diabetes. My grandfather was an amputee and never completely recovered from that. My father has reduced vision because of his diabetes.

I've always been sensitive to sugar, even as a child I couldn't eat Easter candy or other very sugary treats. I also have borderline thyroid/hormonal issues and tend to gain any weight in my core. I know the day is coming. Dh and I talk about it.

I don't have too many problems with diet right now. I'm spending my 30s learning a more balanced diet. My main problem is finding time to exercise. I'd also like to decrease my waistline a bit before I hit my 40s.

I'll probably peak in from time to time because I'm worried about my dad. He had trouble accepting his diagnosis and told himself he was borderline for years and could control it with diet. That wasn't the case. I want to encourage people not to ignore this diagnosis. It's really hard to see my dad struggle with questions like 'will I lose my sight?' 'how can I keep my job?' 'how will my spouse be able to pay all the bills if I go blind?' all because he didn't want medication and thought his diet was moderate enough.
