I thought I would post tech news items here as I come across them. Feel free to add.

First up, "Google ditches Windows on security concerns"

Article from Financial Times, May 31, 2010

Snippet:

Google is phasing out the internal use of Microsoft’s ubiquitous Windows operating system because of security concerns, according to several Google employees.

The directive to move to other operating systems began in earnest in January, after Google’s Chinese operations were hacked, and could effectively end the use of Windows at Google, which employs more than 10,000 workers internationally.

Snippet:

New hires are now given the option of using Apple’s Mac computers or PCs running the Linux operating system. “Linux is open source and we feel good about it,” said one employee. “Microsoft we don’t feel so good about.”

Also reported on ZD net, June 1, 2010

Snippet:

I realize that it’s only one company - a soon-to-be-competitor, no less - but I can’t help but wonder if this move by Google is a sign of worse things to come for Microsoft, as it relates to the future of the Windows operating system. I only raise the point because this FT report reminded me of a blog post by Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps last week in which she explores Microsoft’s position in the tablet game and the company’s need for an answer to the iPad - from an OS point-of-view.

That's interesting, because Win 7 is actually doing well in sales.

Google, however, is not your typical business though.

Not sure I like this one:

Firefox Ditches the Dialog Box

Snippet:

Get ready to say goodbye to Firefox’s multitude of dialog boxes. Recent design mock-ups show Firefox moving toward an “in-content” look where settings, the add-on manager, themes and other “things which formerly appeared in dialog boxes” will now become just another tab in your browser.

While it seems like a good move for the novice, I wonder if it the end may cause confusion by accidentally clicking on the Preferences tab, or will it just clutter the main interface. Not sure. It may be ok.

In the not so unexpected category.

First Windows 7 Service Pack Due Out Soon

Although the update is relatively minor, the release of the first service pack of an operating system has historically been a symbolic indication to businesses that the software is ready for mass consumption. In recent years, though, Microsoft has issued many of the updates that are part of a service pack ahead of that release and the company has encouraged businesses not to wait for the first service pack to deploy a particular piece of software. That's especially true with the Windows 7 update, which consists almost entirely of already released bug fixes.

It is important to note, this is not a major service pack, if you have been applying updates along the way, you are already there. The nice thing about this SP is that it will consolidate new patches for newer Win 7 users and should speed up the update process for initial installs.

And on the Apple front, some interesting engineering:

Apple patent bid combines solar with touch screen

Although Apple has yet to release a solar-powered gadget, its engineers clearly see the potential for solar power in multitouch devices, such as the iPhone and iPad.

A recently surfaced patent application, spotted by Patently Apple, shows that Apple employees filed a patent for a technology to embed solar cells under the touch screens of handheld device
s.

Iphone 4 specs will be out today

The patent app is interesting. Can barely read the phone in the sun, but if it charges the battery, then that would be cool.

I was waiting to be wowed, and ended up a bit underwhelmed. I was hoping to really like this incarnation.

Going with Android...

No more bb?

I don't blame you, but I am not upgrading my phone until next year. Win Mobile (actually win 7 for the phone) is supposed to be much improved, but it might be too little too late for them too. I am staying with Verizon. The Iphone might not come until 2012.

Still with my TMO BB. I am looking to change over to the EVO next month; it'll serve my personal and ministry needs perfectly, and since I am already plugged into the Google cloud, it makes sense.

Still love BB, just seems need a little more multimedia power, and the Android hotspot capability will be perfect for ministry stuff.

Actually the EVO is from HTC (not Google) and from my experience (several years in the mobile phone software industry), they are one of the better phone makers. They are one of the few manufacturers that actually did Windows Mobile phones any justice.

Typically in the past HTC has written a good portion of the user interface themselves, not relying on the OS provider (MS, Google, or other). That is a big reason why they have been so successful, they offer features others can't with the stock OS framework. And the specs on the EVO 4G are drool-worthy for those who look for power in their phones...

4.3-inch WVGA display, capacitive multi-touch, two cameras (one is 8 megapixel autofocus camera and a 1.3 megapixel fixed focus), 512 MB RAM, 8 GB microSD, 802.11 g, GPS, HDMI output, WiMax router, 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, and Android 2.1 for the OS

If only it were on Verizon... sigh...

Agreed. The only WinMo phone that I ever wanted recently was the HTC Excalibur (Dash).

I finally decided on the EVO... great specs, beautiful OS (I am a huge fan of Android) and the phone plan pricing is a true blessing. HTC also made the Nexus One and the Hero, two other Android phones that were on my radar. I am interested in seeing the HTC Sense work on top of Google software.

Plus, as I said, I am already in the Google Cloud: calendar, personal and work email, Google Voice, etc. I have become more intrigued by the possibilities of cloud computing (in some aspects).

I'm on Win Mobile 6.1 and planning to move to Droid at year's end. I totally live in the cloud. (Although, I really haven't had too many problems with 6.1.)

And news from the company that makes my phone:

Don't know how I missed this, but for those looking for small Linux distros...

Puppy Linux 5.0 is now based on Ubuntu.

May sees the release of the new Puppy Linux, version 5.0, also known as Lucid Puppy. For the uninitiated, the main deployment target of Puppy Linux is older, resource constrained computers. In addition, it makes quite a handy live CD for emergency and recovery use.

I don't get the hysteria either. I am interested in a tablet computer, but when I say that, I actually mean tablet COMPUTER.

I was at a conference a couple of weeks ago with a bunch of other web geeks and there were more than a few iPads proudly brought out for the sessions. I watched with some amusement as their users took notes, with varying degrees of success, by "typing" onto the iPad "keyboard." Then if they needed to look at something online, they would close their document, open their browser, close browser, open document, close document, open browser...you get the idea.

Someone explain this to me, because I don't use iAnything. I have had a Windows Mobile phone for the past couple of years and it works essentially like a computer. I run whatever I want, as many apps or whatever, until the battery dies. I honestly didn't know until the iPad was released that iPhones only ran one app at a time. What are the built-in basic apps? Does that mean I can't listen to music and write an email at the same time? Or are those kinds of things not considered apps?

Yeah.. I have the touch..had the phone.

Interesting how apps are different. Some are actual apps.. like my finance program.

Some are just interfaces to websites.

Steve Jobs is a genius on limiting how the Iphone is programmed.. they get a cut of money if it's an actual app..which is why they don't want flash on the phone.. will take away the need for some apps based on websites.

There's a ton of junk out.. and some useful apps.. but it will not replace a computer.

If I needed an actual tablet pc.. I'd wait until the HP slate comes out.. throw One Note and Office on there.. and there ya go. Use a stylus and actually write on the screen.

*If there's an Android / Linux option.. i don't know.

You can listen to music in the background..that's about the only multitasking unless you have the Iphone 3gs or Iphone 4.. which ticks off the people whose phones are only slightly over a year old.

I've downloaded the ibook app but can't see where the advantage would be yet over other ebooks unless they start making exclusive deals with some publishers.

The iPhone/iTouch/iPad devices are definitely capable of background processing, its built into their OS which is based on a fork of Darwin, a BSD Unix operating system. What Apple does is reserve background processing for their own apps - and apps from their preferred providers who have paid the toll to get in. That is why you don't see it so much.

Dell is talking about coming out with an Android based touch netbook "later this year" whatever that means. Most companies have a number of rumors of new stuff that never came about. I would expect someone to come out with an Android based touch netbook this year, and MS will not be outdone and will really push their own also.

The platform is rapidly emerging as a major contender in the e-book reader market, where it is attracting a growing number of hardware vendors."
